Broken Garage Door Spring?

Springs do the heavy lifting on a garage door. The opener only guides it. When a spring breaks, the door suddenly feels like it weighs a few hundred pounds, and the opener can’t lift it. Tune Up Garage Door replaces torsion and extension springs across San Antonio, with a focus on the North and Northeast side, and answers calls 24/7.

Signs your spring is broken

  • A loud bang from the garage, like a firecracker
  • The door opens a few inches and stops
  • The door feels extremely heavy when lifted by hand
  • A visible gap in the spring above the door
  • The door goes up crooked or comes down fast
  • Loose cables hanging at the sides

Torsion vs. Extension Springs

Torsion springs

Mounted on a bar above the door. They wind and unwind as the door moves. Most newer San Antonio homes have them. They last longer and keep the door steadier.

Extension springs

Run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch when the door closes. Common on older doors. They should always have safety cables running through them.

Spring life is measured in open-close cycles, not years. A family that uses the garage as its front door uses up those cycles fast. If one spring on a two-spring door breaks, the other is the same age, so we’ll tell you honestly whether replacing both makes sense.

How We Replace a Spring

  1. Secure the door and release any remaining tension safely.
  2. Measure the door (weight, height, track type) so the new springs match the door, not just the old broken spring.
  3. Install the new springs and check the cables, drums, bearings and rollers while we’re there.
  4. Balance the door so it stays put when you lift it halfway by hand.
  5. Test the opener, travel limits and auto-reverse safety sensors before we leave.

Why Not Do It Yourself?

A wound torsion spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury, and the winding bars and bottom brackets are where most DIY accidents happen. Until we get there: don’t run the opener, don’t pull the red release cord if the door is open, and keep everyone clear of the door.

Spring Replacement FAQ

Can I still open the door with a broken spring?

Not safely. The door is far heavier than normal, and the opener can strip its gears or burn out trying. Call us instead.

Do you replace springs at night or on weekends?

Yes. Tune Up Garage Door is open 24/7.

Should I replace both springs?

On a two-spring door, the second spring is usually close to failing too. We’ll show you its condition and let you decide.

Which areas do you cover?

All of San Antonio, especially Stone Oak, Encino Park, Timberwood Park, Bulverde, Alamo Heights, Live Oak, Universal City, Schertz, Cibolo and New Braunfels. All areas.
